Oyu Tolgoi LLC is pleased to announce the official opening of the first Supplier Enrolment and Development Centre in Dalanzadgad.

The centre will provide training and support to help local businesses become suppliers for Oyu Tolgoi. It is a central part of Oyu Tolgoi’s commitment to source as many of the goods and services it requires as close to the mine as possible, and to contribute to the sustainable development of the South Gobi district.

The centre is intended to be a one-stop ‘home’ for Dalanzadgad businesses and suppliers. Specific business training will be provided as well as help to access micro-credit through Oyu Tolgoi’s US$1 million micro-credit scheme run through Xac Bank.

The centre will house a multi-use kitchen, sewing facilities, conference hall and a computer training room where potential suppliers can learn to use the internet and set up their own email account. It will also provide the most up-to-date information on procurement and how to become an Oyu Tolgoi supplier.

Storage and distribution facilities will be available for products and services made by local suppliers.

Construction work began on the Supplier Enrolment and Development Centre in November 2010, and Oyu Tolgoi spent around US$700,000 on the project .

Eight local Dalanzadgad companies worked as contractors on the project, completing construction work, installing sewerage, power, windows, connecting the internet facilities, and providing signage. The main contractor was Izmone LLC from Ulaanbaatar. All work conformed to industry best practice and to Oyu Tolgoi’s health and safety standards.

Two further centres will open in Khanbogd and Ulaanbaatar in 2011 and 2012 respectively.

Oyu Tolgoi’s President and CEO Cameron McRae said:

“It is so exciting to see the centre open and to know that it will be so instrumental in getting local Dalanzadgad and other South Gobi enterprises onto Oyu Tolgoi’s supplier list. Many people have worked very hard to make this happen and I want to congratulate them all.”

103 businesses from Dalanzadgad and Khanbogd currently are contracted to Oyu Tolgoi, representing a total spend of US$1.5 million.
